JCI Dublin at JCI Leadership Summit at the U.N.
Image At the end of July, JCI Dublin President Kevin Guerin joined the Irish delegation travelling to New York to assist in the JCI Leadership Summit at the United Nation. JCI Members from all over the globe were at the event to discuss the 2008 JCI Commitment to Action to Advance CSR through the UN Global Compact.

At the 2003 JCI Summit with the UN, JCI took over the responsibility to contribute to the efforts of the UN and presented a resolution supporting the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

In the 2004 Summit, JCI decided to focus on the promotion of the MDGs 1 and 6 in Africa/Middle East, MDG 1 in Asia/Pacific, MDGs 4 and 8 in the Americas and MDG 8 in Europe.

In the 2007 Summit, JCI presented resolutions under the MDGs 1, 4, 6 and 8.

During this summit attended by 350 JCI Members, the largest summit so far organised so, a panel of speakers were invited to present to the congregation. These included :
• Matthias Stausberg, UN Global Compact Spokesperson presented "From Principles to Practice: an update on the UN Global Compact"
• Manuel Escudero, UN Global Compact Senior Advisor and Head of Special Projects and Academic Initiatives presented "Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME)"
• Soren Petersen, UN Global Compact Head of Local Networks and Partnerships presented "Networks & Partnerships: UN Global Compact Local Networks"
• Anthony Parkes, ICC World Chambers Federation Director presented Networks & Partnerships: International Chamber of Commerce (ICC)
• Louise Kantrow, ICC Permanent Representative to the UN presented "The role of Non-Governmental Organizations working with the UN"

Some other guest speakers also attended the summit. For example UN Global Compact Executive Director Georg Kell and UN Foundation Senior Adviser Gillian Sorensen (former UN Assistant Secretary General for External Relations). Gillian has been recognised as one of the first JCI ambassadors.
 
By the end of the summit delegates presented a list of resolutions for each of the objectives of this summit. The resolutions will be presented and voted by the General Assembly in the JCI World Congress in India.

Objectives were:
• Focus on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the UN Global Compact as per the "2008 JCI Commitment to Action".
• Finalize the Recognition Program that will grant a "JCI Seal of Approval" to the companies that best embody the CSR concept; and
• Explore and propose actions in order to implement working relations between JCI and the UN Global Compact Local Networks as well as the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) National Committees and ICC's Chamber of Commerce.

Some of the delegation spent some days before and after the summit to visit New York and Boston. Among the diversions were Musicals, Drinks at the bar of the Marriott located at the 52nd Floor in the middle of Time Square, bus tours, visit to the statue of Liberty. Irish JCI Dublin members had a great time in America and needed few days to recover from Jetlag afterwards. However despite some very warm and humid weather they had a fantastic trip.
